When banishing doesn’t work: common mistakes and how to fix them
Share
You followed the banishing ritual carefully, yet the heavy energy, unwanted influence, or stagnant feeling returned after a few days, weeks, or months. Sometimes nothing seems to shift at all. This is extremely common, even among experienced practitioners. The ritual itself is rarely “broken”, especially as intention is the most important. In most cases, one or more of these seven mistakes is quietly undermining the work.
This article is the practical troubleshooting guide that pairs with the main banishing ritual post. It gives you clear reasons why your banishing fails and exactly how to correct each issue.

Important note
I’m a creator of occult jewelry and divination tools, not a spellcaster, therapist, or psychic service. The advice in this article is shared for educational and personal practice purposes only.
Banishing rituals are a form of personal spiritual work and are not a substitute for real-world action. If you’re dealing with serious real-life issues involving other people (such as stalking, harassment, abuse, or legal matters), please contact the police or the appropriate authorities. For emotional or psychological struggles, seek support from a qualified counselor or psychologist. I do not perform rituals for others and cannot handle personal cases through shop messages or chat. Thank you for understanding!
That said, let’s go to the juicy part!
1. You weren’t specific enough with what you’re banishing
Vague commands such as “remove negative energy” or “clear the space” often produce weak or temporary results. Or maybe it gave results, but as they weren’t directed to a specific area, you can’t evaluate the results. The universe (and your own subconscious) responds best to precision.
How to fix it
State exactly what you are removing. Name the feeling, the pattern, the person’s influence, or the specific energy. Then clearly state what you want in its place.
Example: Instead of “banish negativity,” try “I remove all lingering fear, resentment, and energetic ties connected to [specific situation or person]. My home is now filled with calm, stable, and protected energy.”
Supportive crystals
Clear quartz amplifies intention and brings sharp clarity. Tiger eye strengthens focus and willpower during the statement.
2. You skipped grounding or centering before the ritual
When you begin a banishing while mentally scattered or energetically ungrounded, the ritual lacks a stable foundation. The energy you raise has nowhere solid to anchor. From the beginning to the end of the ritual, you need to be in the proper state of mind (that’s also why so many occult books state the importance of strengthening focus, that might be boring at times, but that’s an important skill). Maybe you lacked of time and rushed your ritual right after coming back from work or going out to do the groceries, while successful rituals are often the result of successful planning.
How to fix it
Take two to five minutes before the ritual to ground. Stand or sit with both feet on the floor, breathe deeply, and feel your connection to the earth. Visualize roots growing downward or simply feel your body fully present. Plan your ritual on a free time, turn down your smartphone, don’t hesitate to take a shower or a bath before (it not only cleanses you, it also cut you from the energy of whatever happened before in your day, and can be the starting point of a magic container).
Supportive crystals
Tiger eye provides strong grounding combined with courage. Obsidian helps anchor scattered energy quickly.
3. Your visualization and energy raising felt weak
Going through the motions without genuinely feeling the banishing force is one of the most frequent reasons for failure. The ritual becomes an empty script instead of a powerful energetic act.
How to fix it
Build the energy deliberately. See, feel, and sense the banishing force moving through the space. Speak the words with conviction. If the energy feels flat, pause and raise it again until you notice a tangible shift in the room. Don’t be shy to experiment with techniques to find what works for you. For example dancing can be used to raise the energy.
Supportive crystals
Labradorite enhances intuition and magical visualization. Amethyst heightens spiritual focus and energetic clarity.
4. You banished but didn’t fill the space afterward
Banishing creates an energetic space. If you stop there without inviting positive energy, something can drift back in, especially the same pattern you just removed. Some believe that cleaning a space or energy without “putting” something instead will invite bad things. I don’t believe that, but I do think a clear intention and vision of what you desire helps and brings much more clarity than stopping at “I don’t want that anymore”.
How to fix it
Consciously invite what you want. Set clear intentions about how the space (and your life) will feel and look after the banishing: peaceful, safe, light, stable, abundant, or whatever qualities you desire. Speak these intentions aloud or write them down.
Supportive crystals
Any crystal that embodies the qualities of what you want more of in your life, in place of what you just banished. For example Rose quartz for self love instead of doubt, or fullfilling relationships instead of one direction ones.
5. You didn’t address the internal or unconscious patterns
This is often the biggest reason banishing fails long-term. You can clear external energy as thoroughly as possible, but if the unconscious mind continues to hold the same fears, limiting beliefs, emotional wounds, or repeating patterns, the energy will rebuild itself, sometimes within days.
Conscious magic alone is rarely enough. The unconscious must shift too, or the outer situation keeps recreating the old reality.
Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate. ~ Carl Jung
Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate. ~ Carl Jung
How to fix it
Before repeating the banishing, spend time identifying the inner pattern. Ask: What belief or fear might be feeding this situation? Notice recurring thoughts, emotional triggers, or self-sabotaging behaviors that appear around the issue. Simple journaling or quiet reflection helps bring these patterns into awareness. You can also take it in the opposite way: is there any reason your unconscious could want a situation to repeat itself? Of course, I’m not in any way referring to deeply bad things, and I hope I’m crystal clear on that. What I refers is more like patterns. For example, keeping having financial issues despite smart decisions, only to realize we are unconsciously convinced wealthy people are evil, or having unfulfilling love relations only to discover we don’t genuinely believe we are worthy of love.
Work gently. Combine the outer banishing with small, consistent inner steps. Many practitioners find that addressing the unconscious root creates far more permanent change than repeated banishing alone.
Maybe you might find in Shadow Work a whole new world of magical practices to help you with exactly that. As a passionate practitioner of it, I genuinely believe the exploration of the unconscious is powerful enough to change our lives.
Supportive crystals
Labradorite is particularly helpful for revealing hidden patterns and supporting shadow work. Amethyst brings calm awareness to emotional patterns, while rose quartz encourages gentle self-compassion during the process.
6. Your altar, tools, or space weren’t properly prepared or cleansed
A cluttered, dusty, or energetically stagnant workspace undermines even the strongest ritual. Your tools and altar carry residual energy from previous workings, daily life, or simply time passing.
Your workspace often mirrors your inner state. A messy or neglected altar can send a mixed or unclear message, almost like showing a lack of respect for the change you are asking for. Cleaning and preparing the space is itself an act of commitment and clarity.
Dedicating time to your altar is time well spent, it also represents the care you are putting into your present and future.
How to fix it
Create a simple pre-ritual checklist:
- Wipe down the altar surface
- Cleanse all tools you will use
- Remove items that no longer belong to the current working
- Tidy the surrounding area
Even five minutes of preparation makes a noticeable difference.
Supportive crystals
Clear quartz purifies energy effectively. Amethyst cleanses the space and raises its overall vibration. A selenite bowl on your altar can keep and cleanse the tools you are using most often, keeping them fresh for the next time.
7. The banishment worked… but only for a while
Many people experience clear relief for days or weeks, only to watch the same energy return. Two main reasons explain this:
First, the ritual cleared the surface symptom while the deeper unconscious root (see mistake 5) remained untouched, allowing the pattern to rebuild.
Second, sometimes the old energy or habit puts up a final, fiercer resistance right before it leaves. It’s like when you notice a bad habit becoming stronger for a short time after the banishing, or an intense fear around money suddenly spiking after abundance rituals. This “last stand” is common when something deeply rooted is being expelled.
How to fix it
Recognize resistance as a normal part of the process rather than proof that the ritual failed. Stay consistent. Combine the banishing with ongoing inner work. Consider repeating the ritual with stronger protection and clearer post-banishing intentions. Over time, the combination of outer clearing and inner shifting creates lasting results.
Supportive crystals
Obsidian supports long-term protection and helps you see through illusions. Tiger eye sustains personal power and courage when resistance appears.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
If the banishing still feels ineffective, run through these questions:
- Was my intention precise and detailed?
- Did I ground and center first?
- Did I raise strong, felt energy during the ritual?
- Did I protect the space and invite positive energy afterward?
- Have I looked at possible unconscious patterns feeding the situation?
- Was my workspace clean and prepared?
- Am I treating this as ongoing practice rather than a one-time fix?
Tools that can support your practice
Many practitioners find the following crystals helpful when working with banishing and its common challenges:
- Labradorite pendants or pocket stones, for uncovering unconscious patterns and strengthening visualization
- Obsidian jewelry, for powerful protection and grounding
- Tiger eye, for focus, grounding, and maintaining courage during resistance
- Amethyst, for calm awareness and raising the vibration of your space
- Clear quartz, for amplifying intention and purifying energy
- Lapis Lazuli, for clarifying our judgment
Wearing or placing one or two of these stones on the altar during and after the ritual can provide steady support as you refine your practice.
Banishing is a skill that improves with troubleshooting and consistent application. Addressing these areas usually turns temporary or failed attempts into reliable, lasting results. As with any skill, it’s important to be patient and gentle with yourself. You don’t expect to play a complex piece of music right after starting to play an instrument, and you don’t start pastry by cooking a wedding cake: if your previous ritual didn’t work, it’s probably because of something minor, and you are on the right path and improving right now as you are trying to understand what happened.

For the foundational steps, return to the main banishing ritual guide. You may also want to review the consecration ritual to ensure your tools are properly prepared before each working.
I wish you a very fulfilling ritual!
