Emergency pendulum! How to practice dowsing without one on hand
Share
As a dowsing-obsessed witch, do I believe you should have a pendulum on you at all times? Especially one that I crafted? Yes, absolutely! But life happens, and here you are, with questions to ask and no tools on you. Panic? Optional. Solutions? Oh yes.
Also, if you are a total beginner figuring out if dowsing is for you, it might be the perfect way to give it a try (and fall in love with it of course!).
We'll cover together what can for this time replace a dowsing pendulum: it will not be as comfortable to use as the real deal, but it will get you covered for these burning questions!
The most obvious solution: A pendant necklace
For this one, you'll need a pendant necklace made of a well-balanced pendant, and a soft chain that won't bulk.
The most important point is choosing a perfectly equilibrated pendant: if it goes more to one side, you are doomed to struggle to read the answers.
Ideally, your pendant should weigh between 10 to 40 grams (but if you don't have a pendulum on you right now, you might not have a precision scale as well).
It's best if the pendant is pointy: you'll read the answers more easily.
The chain has to be soft and thin. Why? If it bulks or curves at the pendant bail or jump ring, it might not work as it will influence the moves of your pendulum.
I bet the Ankh necklace, given the chance, would make a great emergency pendulum.
If you can, attach the closure of the chain directly to the bail of your pendant.
If you can, reach a pendant you are dearly attached to: the stronger the connection is, the deeper the divination will be.
Pros:
You are using something you already have a connection with
Cons:
Finding a pendant that’s the perfect weight and balance is a whole quest on its own.
The crafty solution: the DIY
Pick something small and attach it to a thread.
It can work with a pendant, a charm, a ring, a stone (as long as it has a hole to pass the thread through), or anything else.
The OG of dowsing practice, as dowsing came way before pendulum artisans like me. In the days of yore, the technique included using one of your hair, but you might already understand the issue here: only something really light can be attached to a single hair when a proper weight makes dowsing so easy.
When attaching your pendant to your string, try keeping the knot as centered as possible, to avoid it messing with the balance.
Office witch twist: using a thread and a paperclip. Would it make a gorgeous pendulum? Nope, it will probably be the ugliest you ever saw. But when you are trapped in the office, this might be your discreet savior.
Pros:
It costs basically nothing
Cons:
Same as with a pendant, with an intensified struggle when it comes to weight
The hardcore method: using your arm
I'm not kidding. For more than obvious reasons, this last technique is reserved for well-seasoned practitioners. But if you’ve got a strong energetic awareness and body connection (hello Reiki witches), your arm can become the pendulum.
Standing up, let your arm hang without resistance,
Try feeling the micro-movements of your muscles. The thing is to feel these micro impulsions you feel while using a regular pendulum.
Pros:
A badass way to tune in to your body. Bonus: it sharpens your intuitive perception.
Cons:
Extremely challenging. You’ll miss your pendulum real fast.
So no, you’re not doomed when you forget your pendulum. You just have to get a little creative. Don't believe a solution won't work until you try it. Over the years, I created for practitioners who used tons of different things for dowsing before getting to craft their dream pendulum. And I'll always remember this lady who used a chunky chain bracelet for divination, the closure being the bob! Did she see that in a book? Of course not, but her creative solution did work for her for many years!
But still, life should be enjoyable and easy! So what do we do to avoid this in the future?
Well, get tons of pendulums from me! You really thought I wouldn't say that directly for the sake of elegance?
And then:
Carry a pendulum in your pocket or handbag
Yeah, you could have guessed this one right? Simply develop the habit of keeping a dowsing pendulum with you. As this tool will follow you on many adventures, potentially encountering shocks sometimes (the inside of your handbag might be full of surprises) a metal pendulum is the best choice for everyday life.
Small and resistant, the Luzi pendulum is the perfect companion to keep in your handbag.
Gemstone pendulums are wonderful and gorgeous, but just let them on your altar and you'll find them when you go back home.
Pendulum jewelry \o/
Pendulum jewelry is amazing because it's exactly that: a pendulum that doubles as a piece of jewelry.
The dark Lolita pendulum necklace is a great example of how eccentric pendulum jewelry can be. It's not designed for discretion but to be unforgettable.
From scandalous and excentric pieces to the most discreet bracelets, you can directly and simply wear your divination tool. I even craft pendulum earrings to get you covered in all situations.
If you tend to float in your own thoughts and forget everything, pick a simple stainless steel piece: if you wear it all the time, even under the shower and in bed, no way you'll forget your pendulum ever again.
Secret pendulum jewelry: now you have no excuse for not having a pendulum on hand
Whether you're crafting a pendulum out of whatever's in your bag or rocking one around your neck like the stylish divination queen you are, just remember: the magic isn’t in the tool: it’s in you. Stay curious, stay connected, and trust that the answers will always find their way to you!
